Or, use the map editor to assign specific starting locations, and have the team members start in the same system, or adjacent systems. You can still have a random map with this, just make it in-game, save it, and then randomly select starting postions. Just try not to look at the map too much.
Or, have someone that isn't involved in the game set the starting locations.
