What's the best way to test out ai? I'd want to be able to check what it is designing and how it is expanding every ten turns or so (ie, gain control of its empire to check).

Find that runtime batch program that Master Belisarius wrote for processing lots of turns automatically. I think you can even have it save them every so often? Or maybe not. But you can just type in a number of turns to process and away it goes.
