Newbie strategy question, Atlantis shore-bound...
Here's the deal, I'm relatively new to this series and I have a question concerning my current game playing as Early Atlantis. I'm playing on a 200 province map, 35% sea, 5 normal opponents all set to defensive.
After quite a few turns I've finally conquered all the water provinces on the map. The next problem lies in going ashore. The other problem is that I'm pretty well behind the AIs in pretty much everything. What's the best way to strengthen my position before I go onshore? What troops should I attack land with as most of Atlantis' troops are water only...

Kind of a hijack, but can someone also tell me how to skip through a battle sequence after it's begun?

Type "q".
In some Dom2 patch, they also introduced a key to "skip to the next round of combat". I believe this was "n" (that was shortly before I stopped playing Dom2, and I still don't have the full Dom3)

Re: Newbie strategy question, Atlantis shore-bound
Or you can use fto speed up the battle.
Anyway, back to the main topic:
First choice of troops to conquer land provinces are your amphibian troops. There should be an icon looking like a pale lizard in their details. Second, you might want to research construction as you might want to forge items that allow your water only commanders to lead your armies out of the sea (but I'm not sure how many water only commanders atlantis has).
Anyway, have a look at the shore provinces you could attack and look for a province that has some useful troops in it, like archers or cavalry. this might be the perfect position for your first shorebound castle, as it gives you the possibility to recruit troops you the atlantians themselves do not have.
And rejoice, for some reason, many water evocations don't work under water, if you have done some research in evocation, your mages usefullness will definitly increase on land

The shamblers can all go on land and they kick human ***, being big and mean. Once you have some land start making whatever summons you can there to bolster your shambler armies. That's the basic idea anyway.

'n' for 'jump to next round of battle'
'f' for 'increase battle replay speed'
space for pause, right-click for information about units, 'q' exits the fight. Don't remember any others ATM.

Water spells as EA Atlantis? Haha, I'd rather use the Acid/Magma/Blade Wind spells...

Re: Newbie strategy question, Atlantis shore-bound
But if you're not playing demo... there are some nice water evocations. Falling Frost is goot, ice strike can be brutal vs early era no protection units, and niefel falmes... well yeah... there's allways niefel flames. If you do a lot of research. I suppose there's murdering winter, but thats not battle field. But there's also Acid Strom and Magma Eruption. You have many high level evocation options.
