I have a comic that shows 2 different realities at first contact.
Reality 1.
The alien message is decoded as,
"Deceive us and we will descend on you"
at which the Admiral thinks it's hostile and attacks, being destroyed.
Reality 2.
the com officer corrects his mistake, and the message reads
"Receive us and we will descend on you"
which is a sign of peace and mankind makes new friends. It's a really old comic, probably published when the twilight zone was popular.
