				 Finding PBEM files on Vista
I have had a couple of players in my games having real problems finding their game folders in Vista. It seems that for some reason Vista hides the contents of the savedgames folder. This obviously makes PBEM tricky/impossible.
Now, I know there must be a way round this, but it's very hard for me to give advice being as I've never even seen Vista. So, I was wondering if some Vista user could give step-by-step advice on how to fix the problem?

 Thanks!

Re: Finding PBEM files on Vista
 1) Get WinXP CD
2) Insert in CD drive
3) Restart PC
4) Enter BIOS, set to boot from CD-ROM first
5) When XP setup asks what to do, delete all partitions on the disk, make new one(s)
6) Install Windows XP

A little bit more (or less, depends how you look at it..) constructive:

Look for a "mygames" folder somewhere in the user profile ... I think I remember reading something about Vista silently moving "save folders" there, somewhere next to "my documents" ..

Re: Finding PBEM files on Vista
This is where it is for me.
 C:\Users\{profile name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\dominions3\savedgames

If you go to one of your dominions saved games folders, such as
 C:\Program Files\dominions3\savedgames\CasualPBEM
there is link in the explorer window called compatibility files. If you click on it, it will bring you to where the actual files are stored. (the first link I gave)

The easy way I hear is to not install dominions into the program files folder.

Re: Finding PBEM files on Vista
In windows, I recommend becoming familiar with "Windows Explorer" and creating a "Games" folder on your root drive (usually C . I always install new games to this folder and NEVER to their default location. Makes life so much easier.

If all else fails, have them do a general search of the entire hard drive with the "Search->For Files and Folders" tool. In 95/98/XP it can be found in the start menu, not sure about default Vista setups.

Speaking as an XP user, but I have helped my ex with her Vista laptop. The first thing that I did to it was make it look and act as much like XP as I could. |

Re: Finding PBEM files on Vista
I had similar problem with Dominions 3 running on my vista.
I suppose like me, some players have installed the game prior to upgrading their system to Vista, and Vista somehow covered these files.

In my case, the problem was easily solved by reinstalling the game.

Re: Finding PBEM files on Vista
So I'm one of the players with the Vista problem, and Sir Dr D, your tip was perfect. I never would have thought to look there, or even realized that folder existed. Thank you. |
