Little pink dots in sprite tga's?

i downloaded the ashikaga mod and was going through it trying to pick up more modding knowledge, i was wondering what all the little pink dots in the sprite images are for? They appear to represent the outer boundry of the image or something similar. do they have a special purpose?

They represent shadows. Pink is shown as partial transparent black, so it looks like a shadow.
