Re: MapEditing Faq anuwhere?
The maps that are already done are good examples. The ones at www.illwinter.com/Dom2 are well done. The ones at www.dom2minions.com are randomly generated extremes.
Other than that, just ask. Ive been tempted to do a walk-thru for maps (more the text commands than the graphic side)

Re: MapEditing Faq anuwhere?
I'd also be very glad to see some good mapmaking walkthroughs on the text commands, because the map_edit.pdf that comes with the game is so barebones that aside from the tables in it it takes all of twenty minutes to memorize it.
It's also annoying that not nearly all of the switches for terrains are listed (such as many_sites, nostart etc), which makes it a real ***** to modify those settings in the map file later. If you modify it through the map editor and save under the same name, it will wipe out everything you had typed in by hand and there will be just the terrain settings, land names and neighbor lists in the file when you open it again in a text editor, something I learned the hard way a couple of days ago.

What's your problem with the PDF doc ? It has a couple unupdated things (such as castle id list..) but I was able to do what I want in my map with it and a look at some existing scenarios (for "nation map modding" mainly).
Ask what you want to do, you'll get replies

Re: MapEditing Faq anuwhere?
Are the unit number lists available anywhere? It's a real ***** trying to assign some national units to indy provinces (such as Ulmish infantries) without having any idea of the id numbers.

Re: MapEditing Faq anuwhere?
Right now the best way is to download one of the unitview maps. Such as the one here http://home.earthlink.net/~adamschroeder/UnitView.zip
Then create new game with that map with only Pythium. Then you can look at each unit and get the ID numbers.
I'll compile a simple text list tonight that will list the unit number along with the name.

Re: MapEditing Faq anuwhere?
I am editing a map and would like to have the King of Banefires occupy a province, and cast high level magical spells when attacked. I can get him into the province using the .map file below, but he doesn't cast spells, presumably because he is level 0. How do I set his level? Thanks, Merry
#land 136
#nostart 136
#owner 0
#defence 0
#population 20000
#fort 21
#commander "King of Banefires"
#additem "Bone Armor"
#additem "Demon Whip"
#additem "Bane Blade"

Re: MapEditing Faq anuwhere?
Unfortunately he is stuck with puny research and doesn't have any meaningful spells to cast. Currently there is a default grimoire available to independent commanders, but it is likely that he decides that fire flies is less meaningful than attacking. A few commanders have special grimoires (mostly those that appear in special independent lands such as liches, divine mummies and frost fathers), but they are rare.
A new indep grimoire would of course be a nice thing to have in map editing.
