At this point, I'd say "unconfirmed" rather than "hoax". I am an astronomy buff and it is usually very easy for these astronomers to determine if a signal originated from Earth.

True. I think it is more likely than not, just what they think it is, a side effect of something else.  However, we should keep our fingers crossed just in case.
