Soviet-Afghan war on WINSPMBT??
Always tought that the Soviet-Afghan conflict is a very interesting scenario, just discovered a book with tons of tactical vignettes here: ( totally legal downloadable pdf )
http://www.ndu.edu/inss/books/Books%...096/BrOrMn.pdf
And want to ask If WINSPMBT is a good way to represent and fight those vignettes against the AI and what will be the better way to do it
Thank's

You can always try it yourself. Perhaps disabling the AI Tank Heavy option in "Preferences", at least when having the AI controlling the Afghan forces.

Try your hand at scenario design. You may find you enjoy it and we could always use more scenarios.

Re: Soviet-Afghan war on WINSPMBT??
The USSR vs Mujadeen or Afghanistan long campaign and generated battle locs already uses the battle locations from the chronology of "The Bear Went Over the Mountain". It has done since the DOS SPMBT days, as that book is in my collection!.
12/79 for example - will tend to give you "Kabul" (city map) or "Salang Tunnel area". 1/80 Is "Kandahar", 2/80 "Kunar valley" - with a possibility of a town map, or "Shindad" etc right through to 3/88 with "Urgun" and Kandahar Province (can be town).
So - you could take a small core of USSR forces all the way from the beginning to the end of that period, should you so desire, or just set up a random battle or 2. 9/84 for example will tend to be "Pandshir VIII Operation", and those tended to be a mech force sweep through the area - set up a generated battle (assault or advance) with a USSR (or Afghanistan forces) mech company and tanks plus a little support for example. Use the advance and assault, so the Afgan or Mujadeen AI has a reasonable amount of troops!.
For the scenarios in the book - try rolling your own in the scenario designer.
Cheers
Andy

Re: Soviet-Afghan war on WINSPMBT??
As I said - set up an advance or assault random battle and then the tribesmen will have less points since they are delaying or defending and therefore will get only a fraction of the points you spent.

Re: Soviet-Afghan war on WINSPMBT??
Made a nice battle last saturday, I got a marginal victory, lost 5 BTR70 and 3 T62 also 36 men, Mujahideen lost 262 combatants, I captured all the victory locations.
Two things I discovered, Spetznatz and Hind made a great team, the firepower of the Hind with his hability to deploy the Spetzatz make a excelent unit.
And two artillery is limited help in the mountain terrai of Afghanistan
Thank's for the tips!

Re: Soviet-Afghan war on WINSPMBT??
Actually with a forward observer (preferably a light helo) I've found light mortars to be quite useful VS infantry forces.
Drop a few mortar round on them the beginning of the turn you're going to assault the position. While it won't kill them it will cause suppression making them less likely to damage your forces and easier for you to kill.
