Newbie Vicious Circle
I left a message on the original thread but thought perhaps folks might see this first or easier.
Since Black Sun is having problems with his computer and is not sure when he can return and we have a fair amount of intrest I was thinking that if no one else wants to get the game going I can try.
In spite of my rank I really am not that familiar in MP with Admin and starting the game although I have some friends who i am sure can help me.
We have a pretty good group and quite a bit of interest and if we get more we can accommodate up to 17 with the DarkHeavens map, or we can stay with Cradles of Dominion if we get less.
The only real changes I would want to make is the 100 multiplier as I think it will REALLY unbalance some nations to an unfair advantage.
I think we all agree that we don't want anyone losing a battle and deciding to just disappear or go AI, so think long and hard about joining if you have any doubts.
You can PM me or post on here or the original thread.
Black Sun...you are more than welcome if you can get up and running before we would send in pretenders and I expect that will be a couple of days.

Re: Newbie Vicious Circle
I'm still interested. I would volunteer to admin but I have small children. You don't want your admin really sleep deprived.
If I can make it through this game I may try my hand admining.
So what is the procedure for picking nations? BSE didn't really lay it out all that clearly. I would propose something like take all the names of folks who expressed interest in the original thread, randomize them into an order, publish the order, and then each person has 24h to say what nation they want. At the end of this process we will have definite committments from some portion of the large number of prospective players, and you can choose a map based on the number of players.
Edit: I agree with dropping the multiplier to default settings. In general default settings are probably best for a newbie game.

Re: Newbie Vicious Circle
Ooh, I like random nation assignment. Has the advantage of not requiring a long waiting period during which everyone chooses their nation.
Presumably you get to know your nation before designing your pretender.
OTOH, I have to admit I have no clue how to play more than about 4 nations. It will be the utter chaos of noobiness!

Re: Newbie Vicious Circle
But that's why it's great isn't it. It will probably be a nation you're not familiar with, and so people aren't just going to do the "same old same old nation" of their preference. Maybe they will find a new favorite!

Re: Newbie Vicious Circle
I played (errrr Tried to play one rand game) but it broke up pretty fast.
The reason I 'think' (from the posts as it was a Noob game also) is that not being familiar with a lot of nations they made mistakes while some of the luckier players got the nation they knew and ran over the others, and as they got in deep trouble they quickly bagged it.
It was a nightmare for the game as folks where just Disappearing or going AI. So I am sort of biased agianst Random choice on nations
The best way I have seen is to let first come first choose and if there is a real problem then have a third party roll the dice for them.
I usually put down 2 nations when I join so that If one is taken i can get the other without having to much fuss.
I also think we need at least 1 water nation.
I am open to suggestions this is just my opinion.
BTW...I just checked on how to admin and after setting up the game its a breeze so I should be (hopefully) able to do it.
Lets have some discussion as this isn't MY game its OURS and I want folks to be comfortable...I DO think we keep it as simple as possible for the first timers so they also have an enjoyable exp.
I lasted 19 turns in my fist game and counted it as a victory (LOL) and even won a battle, but it wasn't a noob game (my mistake). Let me know also how many players we want...
I have a doctors appt now so i will check this in about 4 hours.

Re: Newbie Vicious Circle
How about diplomacy? No diplomacy / limited diplomacy ala Dakasha's Acronymless would let us just concentrate on fighting, for the most part anyway.

Re: Newbie Vicious Circle
I don't think it is a good thing to put a RAND type game for noob. so that they can enjoy their game it would be better to allow them to choose the nation they were familiar with during their SP experience.
I would like to join the game myself (2 mp games so far) if this is not a RAND game.

Re: Newbie Vicious Circle
Everyone that is pretty new is welcome....We will be taking names for the next couple of days to see if Black Sun can recover his PC and join.
Diplomacy...I think we vote (as I said its OUR game not mine), I like diplomacy as it allows you to actually form a plan and use it.
NOW, we can have a diplomacy game that you are not bound to keep your word (and NO carryover to any other games), thats popular.
I personally always keep my word but that's just me as I wanted that reputation from the very start, but if someone stabs me in the back I don't carry it over into the next game.
If there is NO diplomacy in a noob game then we might as well be playing LA as magic plays a much smaller part and we will lose players quickly as wars get fought pretty easy and players disappear. Remember you start about 2 to 3 provinces away so its easy to be in a war in 4 turns.
I 'think' we would want to try and be able to play the whole game and that includes magic so I vote for binding diplomacy.
Just an opinion.
