Re: sequence of events
As far as I have found out:
- stellar manipulation
- 30 days of movement, combat every 5th day
(minelaying and -sweeping, loading, unloading, launching etc. part of movement)
- retrofit / mothball
- repair
- income
- maintenance
- production
So, if someone enters your system with a fleet intending to glass your planets don't bother to produce defensive ships - they won't be there when combat occurs... Launching already produced mines, on the other hand, will work perfectly.

Re: sequence of events
Stellar Manipulation is done during the movement phase; it can occur after some movement has taken place.

Re: sequence of events
Resource ConVersion happens before retrofit.
Proof: You can successfully retrofit with an insufficient amount of a resource in the bank (say minerals) if you do a Rescource ConVersion operation to create enough of that resource on the same turn.
Unit Launching from planets happens before movement.
Proof: If there is an enemy ship/fleet 1 sector away, you can launch units and if the ship/fleet attacks, the units will already be launched.
I *think* intel happens after movement because of the order in the log.
I *think* all diplomacy actions like change of treaty status & trades occur before movement because of the order in the log.
p.s. I was hoping someone would expand on this topic, because I created a section for it in the Newbie FAQ (see section 14).

IIRC, combat occurs every (30/(ship movement points)).
So a ship with 6 Ion engines will try to enter combat every 30 / 6 = 5 days.
A ship with 6 quantum engines and a solar sail 3 will try to enter combat every 30 / 12 (or 6 engines + 3 bonus movement for the Quantum Engines + 3 bonus movement for the SS) = 2.5 days. (however, I can't recall whether that number get's rounded up or down...)

Re: sequence of events
Combat only every 5th day, I thought I had read that somewhere. Can't find it now. How movement is handled exactly can be found here in this thread.
Sorry, confused stellar manipulation and resource conVersion. Sure, this happens before retrofitting, important. Stellar Manip is handled like launching units.
Lauching etc. can happen during movement as well as at start of it, I don't know exactly how it is done - planets do on day 1, yep. But how about non-moving ships? Does their movement ability affect the time of launch even if they do not move? Maybe one of the experts can help...
Treaty changes definitely come first, you can declare war and run into a minefield at the same turn, or make a trade treaty and avoid it likewise.
I think the log order is genuine, so we can safely assume intel past movement. But where? Before retrofit / mothball / production? Haven't done much intel yet, only countering it
Research is a bit complicated, although not really important to know when it happens. It seems to happen before production, as your current status of research points equals your LAST turns production. And you get results from it NEXT turn. Oh well...
Would be great if you can slip all details into the FAQ, Slick !

First, the html manual that is on the CD mentions that combat can occur every 5th day. It is currently inaccurate under v1.84 (and more recent revs), but was probably true at some earlier Version.
Right now I am trying to get a bunch of info collated for the next revision to the FAQ. I am tracking several threads, tweaking existing sections, adding some new info myself. With a lot of good info coming into these threads seemingly every hour right now, I feel like a one-legged man at an @$$ kicking contest, but I'll get it out in the next few days. Hopefully will get a couple of hours tonight to work on it.
If anyone wants to help by summarizing the info and formatting it with paragraph numbers, that would be great. Out of courtesy, please make sure that due credit is given to all of the authors of any quoted sections you make. Put their name(s) in () after the quote.
Slick.

Re: sequence of events
I have tried to put in order the sum of the knowledge expressed here and have added a new Category "SHIP/FLEET EXPERIENCE, facility"
Also added "SHIP/FLEET EXPERIENCE, combat" to the movement phase on the assumption that combat experience is updated after each round of combat.
1) UNIT LAUNCHING, planets
2) TREATY CHANGES, TRADES
3) MOVEMENT, 30 days, combat at every 5tth day.
-MINELAYING
-MINE SWEEPING
-UNIT LAUNCHING, ships
-LOADING
-UNLOADING
-STELLAR MANIPULATION
-SHIP/FLEET EXPERIENCE, combat
4) INTEL
5) RESOURCE CONVERSION
6) RETROFIT/MOTHBALL
7) REPAIR
8) INCOME
9) MAINTENANCE
10) RESEARCH
11) PRODUCTION
12) SHIP/FLEET EXPERIENCE, facility
Hopefully this will stimulate a bit more discussion.
EDIT: New ships and ships which have their final movement at a planet with a ship training facility benefit from the facility in that turn, as do fleets.

Re: sequence of events
I believe that combat occurs everyday or when a unit or fleet is supposed to move. If your movement rate is 10, you move every 3rd day. If you enter an enemies position on the 3rd day, combat occurs immeditaely. If both are still there, combat will occur again at a later day (next movement cycle for either player or the next day).
There are some interesting things that happen if you have zero movement (satellites or starbases). I once put a stack of Satellites over an enemy world while we were still at peace. When war broke out, we had combat there about 30 times a turn, but we were both out of range of each other (his platforms and my satellites). It was fun trying to find the real battles every turn. It was also a bit happiness hit because of no decision in the battle, but I had lots of ships in the system at my planets, so I was not affected.
