[OT] I need Email
Hey there, this is an off-topic post that I hope to keep rant-free. Let's all see if I succeed.
I need an email account. So PBW can send me turns, and family and friends can leave me Messages, etc. I want to have the email address as I shift from ISP to ISP. Here's what I know:
Hotmail - Sucks. I'm drowning in spam and M$ adverts.
Yahoo Mail - Was suggested by a friend, he said it was fairly spam and ad-free. I dunno though. I don't like their flash ads.
Comcast Cable - I'll be leaving Comcast Cable's service area, so that email account will soon die.
AT&T Dialup - I have this for now, I liked it before I went to cable. Damm it's slow. I may not keep it. So there's no point in spreading this email address around.
All of them refuse to work with Zone Alarm Pro firewall running and the Proxomitron. Yes, I can tweak those apps to allow the specific cookies needed, but blocking ads prevents their web-based email from working. Hotmail won't work at all, Comcast cable asks 7 times to load the Flash executable -- and I simply don't want it on my computer.
What I need is an email service with a few polite non-animated ads or none, that sends minimal cookies, and web access is a plus but not essential. I would spend maybe 20-30 USD a month if it were ad and spam free. Any suggestions along those lines.
Any help at all, really. Thanks.

Re: [OT] I need Email
I use Hotmail, pull it into Outlook Express (no web adds), and have the filter set to 'Enhanced'. If a Hotmail account starts generating too much spam, just pick up a new one. And be more carefull with it. Don't give it out, don't let it be seen in full form on any web page (the crawlers will catch it), and don't give it out.

Re: [OT] I need Email
If you are interested, I could set up an account on Yahoo France for you, because the service is better than on Yahoo.com or Yahoo.co.uk (I have yet to see a spam or an ad on my e-mails there, and you can use Outlook or another program to get your mails. Six mo of storage is allowed, so that should be enough for PBW.)
The two drawbacks are you won't be able to use Yahoo webmail as the language will be French, and the adress will end by this domain. Not sure if that suits you though, but it costs nothing to ask.
Apart from that, I don't know any reliable mail provider with a pop access. If you do not mind having to use a webmail, there are quite a few mail providers here and there with little ad on their webmails, and a rather good service. Hope it helps!

Augh! Outlook ... Express... a Microsoft product. Shudder. Ew. I have to shower now.
Alright, I'm exaggerating a little there. That does seem to be a not too terrible idea, but I want to give my email to my colleagues at work, so when I leave, they can send me Messages for a couple of years at least. I want this email address to be 3-4 years in lifetime. I've had 'bout 4 Hotmail accounts already.
Hmmm... I don't think Pegasus mail will work with Hotmail, wonder if there is a web-based email service that will let a third party program work.
[EDIT]
Alneyan, besides Yahoo.fr and Hotmail, what do you suggest as a web based email. Hmmm...Outlook Express is looking better and better. God, I feel dirty admitting that.

Re: [OT] I need Email
If you are willing to pay, a lot of ISP's will offer you an email only account for pretty cheap. I have one with core.com. I pay 50 bucks a year, so less then ten bucks a month. For this I get email and a few MB of webspace. I can use any third party email software that I am aware of. There is also a web email interface. It has pretty good spam controls. Not much gets through that I don't want. Although, to be honest I have never used it for my PBW emails so I don't know for sure it won't block those.

Re: [OT] I need Email
You want good POP3, you got to pay.
I've kept my current Hotmail for three or four years now. And I have no reason to drop it yet.
I ahve another hotmail account, started around the same time, that I almost never use. It gets no spam.

Re: [OT] I need Email
Thanks for the info Geo, core.com may be exactly what I'm looking for. At any rate, going there taught me a new term for the day: "Personal email account". There are plenty of companies like this. I will shop around a bit.

Re: [OT] I need Email
I use Juno for free Email.
They do a good job of filtering.
They only want you to see their sponsors ads.
Juno's free Internet connection is terrible for SEIV Play By WEB.
They bounced me. They claimed I used too much bandwidth.
They choked my service with so many ads and ad downloads that it would take about ten minutes of connection time before I got to the turn upload page. Then if my connection did not get bounced by this time, I could finally upload my turn.
So it took up to 20 minutes to do turn upload that should have taken about 2 minutes.
Then they bounced me and tried to sell me their premium service.
I use Access4Free for internet access now.

Re: [OT] I need Email
this is what I did after ATT Broadband switched to Comcast, I was tired of switching evey few years my main E-mail addy, so I went here www.ASPwebServer.com started up my own domain, I think I spent $50 for 2 years, I get 5 ot 10 e-maill accounts for that, more than I will ever use. You can access it via the web or POP3. Now I have 1 e-mail that as long as I kep the web pages, I wont have to change it, though I still use my Hotmail for those times I think it might be sold.
