Default Freshwater - Mapmaking

Is there a difference between a province being adjacent to sea province and a province that has the freshwater tag?

Or in other (and more) words: As far as I could deduce it from this forum, the freshwater tag merely affects whether a province can suffer from floodings and related things (Right?). So am I required to tag all coastal provinces as freshwater by hand or can I just mark all non-obvious (i.e. non-coastal) provinces with rivers as freshwater if I think that they are eligible to suffer from floodings and sirens?

Coastal provinces are automarked as such by the game by virtue of bordering sea provinces. This flag is not visble, but it does exist, because Shambler Reefs, Pearl Beaches and Navigator Guilds can only be found in them. Sirens can inly affect coastal provinces.

Freshwater does not affect what kind of sites can be found, only the events. Generally provinces with large inland lakes that do not warrant being made into sea provinces (a good example is the Lake of Mists province on the Faerun map, in the eastern plains near where Tien Chi starts), or areas with large rivers going through them should be marked freshwater, as they would be flood susceptible.

Thanks for the excellent info! So freshwater indeed means soemthing else than saltwater (as one would expect!)

Could I have found that information already in some existing source that I have not found (i.e. is the a Map-Makers-Faq or document around?)

This info has been lying around in various threads that deal with map making, magic sites and so forth, but it is not concentrated in any one place. The part about the coastal flag has never been mentioned before, to my knowledge, but its existence is simply a process of deduction, because there must be a mechanism to differentiate between coastal and noncoastal provinces for event purposes, and especially since the magic site source code defines those three sites as only being available in coastal provinces.

I do think there would be some call for a mapmaking FAQ document (and a modding one as well). I could produce a mapmaking FAQ as long as somebody provides me with the most relevant questions. Can't personally think of so many of them, because I learned through trial and error with the Faerun map and a lot of the info can be found in the mapedit.pdf.

I've not done a single mod myself, apart from a very rudimentary one for Unit DB and Weapon DB test purposes (finding out hidden costs of units and weapon statistics), but I've read the document and can answer several basic questions without trouble. So I would not be the ideal person for doing a mod FAQ, but I could produce one if given the questions.
