Re: Pickup game on PBW, starting now...
I can always depend on the wit and humor of Alneyan to raise my depressed spirits.
As to score, I suspect someone found a ruin that gave them another colony type. Or both. Me? I found the dreaded "massive fill-in-the-blank" weapons.

Re: Pickup game on PBW, starting now...
Well, I have another interesting story if you want Slynky. Let's say we are on turn 70. Your Empire has a score of 7.5 million points, 800,000 research points (you had 500,000 of them on turn 50), about 2,000,000 resources, 450 ships, 450 colonies, three times as many systems as the other player, and virtually maxed out technology. It doesn't seem to be a poor situation at all.
Now, you have forgotten how to use a military, and got four of your fleets destroyed despite being more numerous and having a tech lead. You have firepower unheard of at your disposal, and yet your target is still alive, smirking and apparently not too frightened by the three hundred dreadnoughts you have just sent on the front. Doesn't that just seem odd?
Oh, I am in the situation described above, and the target is Geo. I have never been doing so well with economics, but my military skills aren't exactly stellar in that game. I believe we should play together again; that was a working association, with your superior designs and my fondness for economics, and our levels are close enough (unlike my association with Primitive, where I only act as Asmala-fodder). Hmm, would that be aggressive recruitment?

Hmmm, well I hope not Slynky. I thought I turned off ruins, but I must have forgot. There don't seem to be very many though. I can only see one in my area, and it's the wrong planet type.

Makes me feel even worse! I've found about 5 (and settled them). A couple of OK ones (supply 2, mineral 2, and that neural thing). Got 300,000 minerals now, though! One yielded nothing (must have been something that I already had). And after all that, STILL 3rd place! Grrrrrr.

Re: Pickup game on PBW, starting now...
I think the game is pretty much over, too. Never did like running around "glassing planets" when it seems obvious the game is over.
2.1 million in score. 141 colonies in 30 systems. 235 ships. There is a bigger fleet preparing for each of you...bigger than the one currently in each of your empires. They consist mostly of BC and BA hull ships and all move at a speed of 9. Next turn, I'll refit my stellar ships to 200-sector openers (they have already arrived close to the staging area).
Flatline's bad luck was taking Gas, I guess. Seems like gas planets sucked for him this game. I also got about 6 techs from ruins. Never a colony type, though. I never used the Neural Net thingie. Best I got was Mineral 3 (when I had mineral 2), I think. Storage 2 was kind of nice. And, I got cruiser when I had it about 25% researched. I settled a planet this Last turn and got that Planet Utilization stuff (who cares, right?).
In closing, I'd say the game worked out fine with 3 players who decided to stay independent and not jockey for a 2 vs 1 position.
