Stupid fighters!
I have been playing against the computer with SE IV Gold. I found that my fighters (very basic DUC I models) were not engaging the enemy even though they were set to "optimum range" as default. I had to set them to "fighter attack".

What is their secondary strategy?
Are they in a fleet? If so, what is the fleet's strategy?
What do the fighters do? Do they run for the corners, or do they just sit in place? If they run for the corners, then they are using the "Don't Get Hurt" strategy for some reason.

They were alone with their carrier. They didn't run to the corners but didn't attack anything either - they launched then "milled around"!

That is weird. Can you email me your savegame file? I can't think of why they would do that. Maybe if I could see it, I could figure it out.

Did the enemy ships perhaps have emissive armor? I have seen fighters not engaging a target, because they "think" that they cannot hurt the target that has emissive armor greater than the max. damage of the fighter weapons.

Did you check whether any of the "Do not fire on" options were set?

I've never used "fighter attack." Maybe it causes them to look for other fighters to attack??? And since there aren't any, they just sit there doing nothing??? I'm just making wild guesses.
