 Shields are what stops arrows. And armor helps, of course.

 |  No, it forces the person hit by the ethereal crossbow bolt to make a save or die.
 
It's basically Soul Slay built into a crossbow.

 To follow up on this, when a projectile is parried by a shield does that make use of the base def value of the parrying unit?
 Would a guy with 40 defence have a better chance of parrying a missile using a standard shield than a guy with 5 defence? I know in melee the parry chance is the same (if you have high def you are just more likely to dodge and not need to parry) but I wonder about ranged.
