Hi,
I've just ordered my SG4G copy, and will play the demo while waiting for the plane to land (I'm in Europe...

).

I've been a long-time fan of 4X games, RTFS, MOO1 and 2 (preferred the 1 though), SW:Rebellion alos, but didn't find much good 4X games those Last years, all is 3D RT junk

I was repelled by SE3 complexity and very very bland appearance, seems Ok now ...
Now I expect SE4 to give me many long gaming nights !

In the meantime I'll try to get accustomed to all things SE4, and noticed a motherlode of addons, tools, mods, and so existed ...

What can you old space grogs advise me ?
Are the ST and SW mods good ? Can one start with them or stick to the "standard" game ? What good graphics mods do exist (if they exist) ?
Best scenarios ?

And perhaps more important, good tutorial/articles to help me conquer the galaxy ?

Having just learned about 70% of the game I would suggest that you run the tutorial. Then start a game try out stuff get but kicked, repeat. I found doing a game or two with only neutrals slightly boring but extremly useful in flattening the learning curve.

This was all with standard pack.

by the way why PDF? Really like Acrobat?

For ST races, look at Atrocities sig. He's got links to all his races (i'm having a great time with them now). For SW races:

But the SW aren't gold compatible, but its real easy to get them working. Search for capnq, in his sig theres a link for updating non-Gold AI's to gold.

I learned by doing a quick start. Then turning on complete ai, then just clicking on next turn and seeing what the AI does. You get a feel for what you should be doing, but its really just the beginning. That ~petemmer is a really great resource, i would read the whole thing.

Thanks to all for the replies and the welcomes, this seems to be a very friendly community, amongst the best I know (along with Combat Mission and SFC, my Favorites !

I just started the demo tutorial, game sounds great and deep as space !
I also browsed the Web and found an amazing wealth of sites and mods, especially the PBW site ... However spaceempires.org seems empty ..

the webmaster claims all has been lost on April 1st, I thought it was an April's fool but it seems real

!!

As for my first post I realized I confused SE3 with Stars! when I spoke of an overly complex and awkward game, apologies ...

And for the sig PDF, I have nothing to do with Adobe but this happens to be my real name initials and I find them cool - as in Planetary Defense Force also

I'm trying to have some basic understanding of the how the mods work, but won't have enough time to try them all, so I still need advice about what are the best/more interesting one.

As long as I only have the demo (the real game still has to cross the Pond w/o any wormhole), I suppose I can't install the mods ? perhaps the images and sound files though ?
