Multiplayer in other 4X games

I'm just curious if anyone here does PBEM or something similar in any other 4X games out there like Gal Civ or Space Empires V or anything like that.

I played Dom3 in just Single player for some time before ever doing Multiplayer.

Unfortunately in some other games like Space Empires V the AI is absolutely no challenge in the slightest to the point that I really don't think it has any clue what it's even doing. But yet if there is any kind of real Multiplayer community going for some of these other games I havent found it in my casual searching. And what I do see seems to be mostly older forum posts from months or years past.

If anyone here plays some other types of 4X games like those perhaps you could steer a fellow Dom3 player in the right direction to try one of them out. Although if what my searches have turned up is all there is than I don't expect much of a response for this post lol.

There's a relatively large SEV community playing PBEM, or was until the PBEM server crashed. Last time I checked there was a new server running, so...

The pseudo-RTS Hearts of Iron 2/EU3 also have a large MP community.

I have a friend who plays VGA planets PBEM.
Theres online games, Age of wonders, MOO2, Heroes, CIV, etc

There is a Space Empires V forum here but its pretty much dead. and besides that I dont think its even affiliated with Illwinter or Shrapnel so I'm not sure why it's even here in the first place actually.

never heard of VGA or at least dunno what that abreviation is for..

MOO2, Heroes and Civ I have played although the only time I have ever played any of them in MP was in one of the Heroes Beta's

I found SEIV to be very much like Dom3. Particularly with player mods adding over 300 nations, and setting the galaxy MUCH larger.
On the other hand I was very unhappy with SEV.

I also greatly enjoyed VGA Planets 3. But VGA Planets 4 Ive been waiting on my pr-purchase copy for years. And Im afraid that its become too deep for any tutorial or book to ever tackle.

Stars! is a worthy game to look at for a short time.

Well I was Extremely unhappy with SEV at least looking at how completely stupid the AI was.. It was almost like playing Risk by yourself having just setup other peices to represent your enemy and attack them without any actual challenge. At least thats how I felt about it. But the game did show promise and with an intelligent opponent I'd imagine it could be a lot of fun. Plus the game was easy as hell to mod as well. I think SEV actually came with SEIV but I didnt really play it.

Never seen VGA Planets before but I just went to the website and downloaded the demo I'll check out later.

Might look at Stars too.

SEV AI is better with Captain Kwok' balance mod - its a must in my opinion (though it has been a while since i played it) A new version was released this month 1.19

Another great MP game, if anyone remembers, is Emperor of the Fading Suns -crap AI but a fantastic multiplayer experience.
