Jeez, haven't even seen the winged icy llama. Once more for good measure:

Oh well.

Edit: or P3D for that matter.

This probably won't help your situation much, but in addition to patrolling and reducing tax, friendly dominion decreases unrest and hostile dominion increases it.

If you are uncertain about any game mechanic, then just run a test game. This test in particular is very easy to do. Just start a game as Pan, recruit a load of Satyr Sneaks, and watch your unrest go through the roof.

Well, Calahan, you're right about playtesting, I should have read the troop description more carefully. It says there, clear as you like: "Satyr sneaks cause unrest in the province they dwell." Seems like I have some problems reading properly at the moment.

I just tried it out, recruited a ton of satyrs in my home province hand hit the e button a coupla times... Ét voilá, 65 unrest after 4 turns with about 40 satyrs in my home province.

While I am now conviced that this is the most likely scenario, what about Arco? It says in heretics' description that they "weaken faith in false gods" so this presumably refers to dominion (as in the nation's description). So does enemy dominion increase unrest or doesn't it? After all, there could be more than one cause for unrest...

Oh, I see. I never noticed the satyr sneaks in the recruitment box. In which case, that's the most likely culprit.

I was referring to sneaking troops in general: having a stealthy army stationed in your territory doesn't raise unrest unless they have a special or the commander is a spy.

EDIT: No, heretic doesn't raise unrest. I was thinking of one of the demon lords when I said that.

My brain isn't working very well today.

Heretics don't cause unrest. View Heretics (and Stone Idols carries) as the atheists of the Dominions world. They don't believe in any Gods, and will try to bring the Dominion in a province back to neutral. So they are a great way to bring down an opponents dominion, but you don't want any hanging around in your own dominion. (unless you want to keep your dominion down, as some nations might eg. MA/LA Mictlan, MA C'tis)

So Calahan, that means I could actually give myself bad scales and suppress my own dominion?

Depends.

EA/LA Mictlan surely can, since they can only spread their dom through blood sacrifices.

I thought about sceptics + bad scales but the big problem is that once your bad scales have set in a province (which mostly happens when a province has your dominion) they will stick around after you remove your dom.
And since the points you save on your scales normally go either in an awake SC (=provinces you take with your god automatically get +1 dominion) or a bless (=high dominion) it's hard not to have them spread.
The only thing I can imagine where this could work is drain (since it's enough to have a few provinces without drain).

Yes. It's most likely to be useful with Drain and to some extent sloth Sloth, because the effects are so easily localizable. I.e. to overcome Turmoil scales you'd need to cancel out your dominion everywhere, but to overcome Drain-3 you just need to overcome it where your researchers are. If you took Sloth for Philosophers and want to pump out myrmidons/chariots, eliminating Sloth in a key province with Iron Mine or something *might* be worth the hassle.
