Default No Air Transport In night?

Hmm.. not sure if it is a bug, code limitation, or even a design decision, but i can't buy air transports in low vis. battles, and i don't think a para/glider insertion at broad daylight is, hm... healthy.
What causes this?

It is really much easier if you quantify the sort of figure that you mean by "low" - e,g is your low 3 or is it 12 or 22?

In SPWW2 you will not see much air support at all below 20 hexes visibility, since WW2 planes don't have night vision aids. Almost none under 10. In random battles, at least.

20 hexes is a kilometre, and so a clear full moonlit night. (A "bomber's moon").

Jumping out of perfectly good aeroplanes to dangle on a handkerchief is also rather more dangerous an activity if visibility is low. Ditto trying to crash a glider.

In the scenario designer, you can of course buy any amount of air you desire even if the visibility is nil. Just expect mayhem on meeting the ground, and any supporting air strikes wandering all over the place.

Paratroopers and transports/gliders really are scenario designer toys. Air landing operations were not random on-the-fly things decided at the level of a colonel or brigadier at a few hours notice, but took weeks/months of preparation at army level or higher. Those unit classes probably really need to be cut from the random battle purchase list.

Cheers
Andy

I always wondered what the deal was with paras. Low vis you your in trouble, high vis your in trouble. So maybe they plan missions on medium vis?

You could just add a note to the unit instead of removing them. I remember a while back you guys had an note on the heavy lift helocopters that basically said not to cheat by using them to lift MBTs.

This a complete non issue. I can set the visibility to 1 and still see all para formations offered paras offered AND gliders and air transport in Misc. Don't worry...Paras are not going to be removed from the menu

Yeah, just figured the cause, i play on x air support, so, when visiblility is under 20, the game mostly decides not to give you air support

The XXX for air support mainly compares code in the game to determine is one side or the other is more or less likely to have air superiority based on the date. The " under 20 vis "issue is secondary based on the likleyhood of any air assets in "bad weather" or "night" ops. If you want those assets without the code deciding this for you set the number of air sorties to whatever you like and then you can drop paraa at 1 visabilty of you like

Unless of course you are in a campaign (not a user one) - which is always XXX, i.e. ignores any preferences setting.

Cheers

And this is a very good example of why we need ALL the info when a complaint is made. Not once was XXX air settings mentioned in the original post. We don't even know which sides were involved. It's not important now but it should have been mentioned because I ended up running test one way and Andy another and it all revolved around the XXX air settings.
