Enhanced Version Windows?
I downloaded the free versions of both WinSPMBT and WinSPWW2. I played a couple of scenarios in MBT. The game is good but, of course, being so old, the graphics suffer.
I played both games for a long when they came out in the 1990s.
I wonder if it is worth buying the enhanced versions.
I can run the games both in windowed and full screen. In the window mode the graphics look better but the window is too small. I have a high end machine and can run the best resolutions. So my first question is, in the enhanced version are the windows at higher resolution bigger? If so, this is probably enough to get me to buy them.
The info page for the games states that the enhanced version has Opfire filters but I note the download version has them too. What is the difference?
Third question: One of the things that got me away from SP2 (now MBT) was that after a few years of playing, I determined it was nearly impossible to set up a proper over-watch. You could set up units to do so, but the enemy would just pick them off in his own turn; it was a problem due to the turn based nature of the game. Does the Opfire filters help with over-watch in anyway?
And lastly, what else is there in the enhanced version that I would want?
I'm a pretty hard-core wargamer and I like much about the SP system. I'm not likely to play it PBEM and I'm not interested in the tournament enhancement. The game seems to play well in the free download version so I'm just not sure about purchasing the enhanced version.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Enhanced Version Windows?
In desktop windowed mode the game fills the screen and the graphics are sharp and clear
All the features in the Enhanced Version are detailed in the game guide
The basic version only has basic opfire
I cannot upload full screen shot because Shrapnel restricts the file sizes buy compromising the quality and that defeats the purpose of trying to show how clear desktop mode is in windows but here's a zipped attachment
Don
EDIT....this zip is better than the first one I posted but it's still not quite as good as what you'll see "live"

Re: Enhanced Version Windows?
Don:
Thanks. I'll likely order the two enhanced versions today. Your picture convinced me.
I am now playing a 1940 battle in WinSPWW2. I forgot how good this game system is. When it came out, I liked it so much I abandoned Advanced Squad leader (which I have since got back into greatly).
I'm retired now and I think this this may suck my life away for awhile.

Re: Enhanced Version Windows?
To play well you need playing in full resolution so you need enhanced version. I strongly suggest you buying. My best buys in years of playing are winSPMBT, SPWWII, Combat Mission games.

You rather have to play in low resolution, as the fonts are tiny. However I too strongly suggest you buying, at least to support the patches.

I purchased CD versions for both games. They are up and running well on my machine and the windows resolution is fine.

Can someone explain Opfire Filtering vs Basic Opfire?

Re: Enhanced Version Windows?
In general with Basic Opfire you can set only the range at which a unit will fire.
With Opfire Filtering you can set the range of fire vs infantry, soft vehicle, armor, anti-tank, and aircraft separately and minimum and maximum values for armor.
Thus for instance you could set a unit armed with a light anti-tank weapon to fire at only lightly armored vehicles and your tanks to ignore lightly armored vehicles and save their fire/ammo for more heavily armored ones.
That help?

Re: Enhanced Version Windows?
As a side note apart from the graphics on the enhanced version making it a far better experience & saving you time the other enhancement's make keeping track of your units far easier & hence let you play faster & more efficiently.
The enhanced version therefore lets you play better & a lot quicker so you can play more battles in the free time you have. And that's without taking advantage of the extra features like the opfire filter.
If you play it regularly you are effectively cutting into your free time by not upgrading.
