Drones are expensive to build but cheap to maintain. They're immune to subverters, boarding, partial damage, and many special damage types because they are units. They can either be a waste or a decisive weapon, depending on how they're used.

High-tech drones can overwhelm PDC, and also can soak PDC so fighters and seekers can get through.

They are also a good way to hide force concentrations. Even if your enemy has scanners to see your fleet size, a scanner jammer or scattering armor on a transport or two can conceal whether or not it is stuffed to the gills with drones.
