CTP2 had good stuff in it, I especially like all the wonders and the ability to advance into the future (Diamond Age!). The thing I think it has over Civ 3 is the old-fashioned way it does technology. The number of research points required to make an upgrade is the same for each advance, for all players. It's simple, it's how it's always been done, and it lets me be that technology race that beats everyone out of the wonders. The way Civ3 does it is incredibly annoying. The more people that have a technology, the easier it is to research. While this is arguably more realistic, it pisses me off
- I'm the guy that always plays a variation of Psilon in moo2, i always max out research racial benefits, I LOVE playing the technology race, but you can't do that in civ3. Unless you whore your technology out to the highest bidder, you fall behind. I really don't like civ3's technology system.
The main reason CTP2 didn't quite catch on was the fact that it was rushed for release. There's a long story about Civ: CtP and Civilization games, how they split, who had the trademark, and I think the battle was coming to an end in Sid Meier's favor, so the game was released prematurely. Result: CtP2 has a HORRIBLE AI. Some other things are bugged. Civ3's AI is much better.
However, CtP2's source code was released like half a year ago, and since some of the mods are already amazing, and make the AI quite challenging, I see nothing but good things in the future for CtP2!!
