Some comments:

The secondary mission have several functions as:

1. Giving the feeling of multiple stages of a mission.
2. Ability to slightly modify some parameters of the primary mission by assigning special objectives and relating the outcome/score of the battle with the cross-link direction.

Anyway, if a designer wants to make LINEAR the cross-link connection of a secondary mission with the primary one, then this is fine.
