SP: How much difference does scenario/map make?

Till now I kept beating AI, playing up to 1-below-top (Mighty?) bunch of random AIs, random map, probably "medium" average size.

So, over-confident, I try the "Dawn of Dominions" against all Impossible AIs, and lose ugly.

Am I just unlucky?

Or, is the situation much better for the AI here, if so how?
