All of their counters belong to late game, except for Wither Bones and national H3 priests. And in late game Ermor has Burden of Time + Utterdark.

but they look almost weak at the end game when SCs and powerful battlefield magic effectively neuter them.

That`s why you need to eat half of the map before endgame. And then you cast Burden of time.

This is purely anecdotal, but in my MA Ermor game, I lost an entire army of 1,000+ cavalry units to a single well placed spell.

Only a thousand? Thousand is a small expansion party for LA Ermor.

chaff armies can be easily brought down with the right tactics.

Only to be replaced by more chaff. Lost 100 chaff to kill 1 enemy troop? It`s OK ratio for you.
