Fire Mission question

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I noticed that if I want artillery to switch from HE rounds to smoke I have to call in a new fire mission and have to wait 2 or 3 turns. You would think it could be done faster. I'd appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks.
