Baron, I've been thinking on and about the same thing for several weeks now, however, I would hesitate to 'copy' the race styles to make Base Ships without first getting a clear ok from MM.
There may be some copyright issues involved, or at least sensitivities anyway.( and not all on their side either)
Besides which, they, Malfador, may already have done the work you are looking to initiate, ditto on the components.
I am not an artist, however, I know several whom I might be able to convince to do some, maybe even all, of this stuff. ( And BTW - a good computer graphics artist could easily do all 20 images; not sure how long it would take to finish though; 40 to 80 hours from get-go to wrap-up be my guess.)
Since it'll cost me more than just a few beers, I just don't want to go off half-cocked.
Why do I now have the feeling I may regret even opening my ... whatever ... ?

But there are still not enough weapon images to handle all of the ideas for unique weapon types that have been pouring out here and elsewhere. If people with some ability in graphics design were to create a few more and make an "image upgrade" mod for the game that would be as useful as the text file mods we're currently seeing.
