"Design type" has got to be the design types recognized by the game, and these are listed in the XXX_AI_DesignCreation.txt file. Since there can be many kinds of "Attack Ship" or "Defense Ship" or what not this does leave quite a bit to be desired in ability to control your formations. Let's hope that MM will address the problems of building these subtypes in the proportions that we want and putting them in formtions the way we want in a future patch.
