Default Mod/Launcher Help

Can someone please put it very simply for me (computer illiterate)

I have downloaded all the mods and have the mod launcher...

but I cannot get the mod launcher to work properly, the only way it will work is if I use IE to open it, just clicking on the "mod luancher" I get the screen and a list of mods but I cannot proceed from that screen.

What directory exactly does the mod launcher need to be installed into, it says to SEIV.exe but where is that? It is in the same directory as the standard gold SEIV start icon.

Also what directories do the mods need to go into.

Please be a specific as possible.

Thank you.

I use the mod launcher and have no problem.

I have my launcher in the same directory as the seiv program. I click on the mod launcher and the launcher come up with a list of mods. I then choose (by clicking on it) the mod desired and then I click on: Play SEIV in the lower left hand corner. The program then starts with the desired mod chosen. Maybe you forgot to click on one of the mods before clicking on Play SEIV.

The tree of folders for SE4 should look like the following:
code:
C:\ -- Malfador -- SE4 -- AI
| \-- Data
|\--- Pictures
|\--- ...etc...
|
|\--- TDM-Mod -- AI
| | \-- Data
| |\--- Pictures
| \---- ... etc ...
|
|\--- Pirates&NomadsMod -- AI
| | \-- Data
| |\--- Pictures
| |\--- ... etc ...
\---- ... Etc ...

Where each mod is in its own folder inside SE4, and has a very similar structure to the Main folder.

Most mods you can open with Winzip, and "extract" to the Main se4 folder. They will automatically create and install into their subfolders as above.

Read the readme.txt included in the Zips if in doubt.

yep, what Taz said. In addition, you should have your mods in seperate folders within the space empires folder. Here's a screenshot to show you the ideal directory structure - note the launcher and the se4 programs side by side.

EDIT: Damn S_J...

Anyone ever have trouble getting new passwords to stick in the Mod Launcher? It keeps defaulting the original password for me on one of my games.

Nope, never had cause to try this one out. Make sure you are able to edit the launcher.ini file (it's not write-protected 'coz you copied it off a cd or anything like that.) Also, make sure you're clicking the "save data" button and not just changing the password then starting a game.

Edit: you could always delete the launcher.ini file and re-enter your password. You'll have to re-enter *all* your passwords and player numbers if you do that though

The only problem I had with mod launcher is that once I started the mod, there were times I couldn't find any races/shipsets. I think I solved that problem before my computer got zapped. Unfortunately, it looks like my external harddrive where I was keeping everything got zapped as well, so I'll have to download all of those mods again once I get a new computer.

OK, the way se4 handles races in mods is kinda wierd, and it can lead to races appearing to disappear (if you see what I mean).

FOr example, in my standard pictures/ races folder I have over a hundred races, but only 20 or so in my Proportions/pictures/races. If I wanted (for example) the Hampsterattii to appear in my proportions games, I would have to include a Hampsterattii folder in proportions/pictures/races/ -the wierd bit is that I can leave this folder completely empty if I want to, because se4 will see the empty folder, then use images from the standard pictures/race/Hampsterattii...

Unfortunately, though, you can't just charge around creating empty proportions/pictures/races folders for all your races, because unless mod-specific AI files are present in proportions/pictures/races/whatever it will take the AI files as well as well as taking the pictures from the unmodded game, and the unmodded AI files are worse than useless in a mod like proportions.

I hope everyone is thoroughly confused now.
