Re: how great would this game be if...
Personally, I don't need to have better graphics for SE5.
But also, I don't need a 3D space combat or an engine for invasion combat (after dropp the troops over a planet) for SE5 as other people requested.
Even, I don't needed the option to play SE4 using TCP/IP!!
If you ask my personal big request for SE5 is: more tools to create more strong AIs.
BUT then, why Aaron included TCP/IP support for SE4 and will include a 3D space combat and probably will exist some kind of planet combat (hope optional) for SE5??
Think the answer is easy to see: Aaron need to sell more copies trying to atract more and more players.
My conclusion: don't think a 3d space combat, better graphics and cinematics would help SEV to be a better game... but think would help SEV to improve the sales and to be a more "comercial" game instead a "niche" game.

"Finally... why don't you do it? Almost all the graphics in se5 (the ships, the maps, most of the interface, the icons...) are stored as bmps to be freely editted. There's nothing to stop someone creating a full graphics mod for the game."
Yes there is. Not all the interface is in the .bmps for some reason; if you try an interface mod you end up with a confusing mis-mash of colors.

Re: how great would this game be if...
The vast majority of SEIV shipsets are made as "snapshots" of 3-d models generated by either Doga, Porray or some other grafic program.
I am absolutely convinced that if Aaron will make possible to import for example Doga models into SEV, we will immediately have dozens of high quality SEV shipsets !

Re: how great would this game be if...
For graphics, I would just like to see something like the explosion, or the graphics in Civ 3 used; a simple frame animation of sequenced images that anyone can make. With a file indicating how many frames, so the existing races could be used with a single frame, and people could make animated sequences if they wanted to.

Re: how great would this game be if...
The ship Graphics in SE:V are going to be .X files with bitmap textures like those in SE: Star Fury. I think this is a good step and allows zooming etc, of ships, instead of just overheads and portraits. I'm already expanding my ship making skills to include this format...
However, I don't think this development necessarily means that the combat engine will be real-time, but at least the images will be rendered real-time.
I think an option between turn-based or computer controlled real-time combat would be preferential.

Re: how great would this game be if...
Yeah, the level of graphics in Civ 3 is fine. Just minimal animation to show some facial expressions in the diplomatic screens and some slight variation in close-up images of planets and stars (clouds and 'sun spots' rotating across the surfaces) is all we need outside of combat.
Real time combat could be included in a properly designed 'impulse' combat system. Just hit 'automatic' and the high-speed playing out of initiative controlled combat will look just like real time.
