Re: Worst "oops" moments in PBW?
I am in the top 3 of the 3 games I am in, but that doesn't mean I don't make mistakes. One of those games I commited one of the following. The rest were mistakes in prior games:
1) Forgetting to change the default strategy for ships to target Closests. This can cost you battles quickly as all your long range shots fail to hit anything.
2) Hitting the 'withdraw from game' link instead of 'undo turn' in a PBW game.
3) Building Minelayers and Satellite layers (two separate designs the same turn) without engines. Retrofitting is of no use unless you have a Resupply facility there as well. I have always liked how shipyards can supply a new ship, but not a retrofitted one. In this case, I ended up scrapping the ships and rebuilding them because it was faster than grouping them in a fleet to resupply. A little costly in resources at a critical time for my empire though, but time was a bigger issue.
4) Upgraded ship engines at a site without a Resupply facility. I did several ships of the same design the same turn. Lots of ships were stranded until I could fleet them with a buddy to go to a Resupply base.
5) Forgetting to uncheck 'split research evenly' the first turn of a game.
6) Forgetting to allocate research the first turn of a game.

Damaging sectors are very useful if your doomed fleet can suck the enemy fleet into chasing you into it.

Then what would be the point of ever building Resupply facilities? They cost 60% of a Shipyard and you already need lots of Shipyards. You would have to make Resupply facilities cheaper to ever be worth building. This might add one mineral or research facility to starting homeworlds since the Shipyard would already be considered a Resupply facility.
The problem would still exist for space based shipyards (Bases and Ships). Unless you make a Ship Yard component act like a Quantum Reactor, but that would not work for bases unless Settings.txt allowed bases in fleets.

Re: Worst "oops" moments in PBW?
Okay, this is not PBW. This is in fact single-player and in Propoertions, but anyway..
I was sending out colonizers far and wide and worried about my ships running out of supplies. So I made a long-range Version of my colony ships equipped with efficient Versions of engines and I was pleased that they could go a long, long way without running out of supplies.
It took me a while to realize that since using efficient engines dropped my colonizers' movement to 1, I might as well have just let my movement 2 colonizers run out of fuel and limp along.

LOL
I am glad you posted this. Have I done it? No.
I am playing my first Proportions game and my colonies are 2 speed for the close in planets.
But for the longer ranges, I could have decided to use efficient engines!
Because of this post, that is not likely to happen!
