Huh? for every other sun-dependent mechanism, the Ring/Sphere is not a sun. But you still can't use a sun maker? Arrgh, where's my ringworld test scenario when i need it.

I can confirm this. think about it- if it wasn't this way you could build an endless number of ringworlds.

I always thought there was some sort of limit as to how many planets there could be in a system - if you limit the number of stars, then why not limit the number of planets?

There is:
Creating a planet uses up asteroids... so when there are no more asteroids, you can make no more planets.

There is no limit per se - you can mod system_types file to have sun and/or planet in every sector ! The only limit is on the creating star or planet during the game. Just to stop build ringworld - build star - build ringworld cycle.
