If I remember correctly, unless one of your racial traits is "Natural Merchants," you need a space port in every one of your systems to gain the benefit of any production/research/intel being produced there. Exceptions being (memory serving...it's been a long day):

1) Your Home System (wherever your Homeworlds are located), and
2) Remote resource harvesting, where you will get the minerals/organics/rads extracted even if you don't even have a colony in that system.
