I use a 500MHz P2 and sometimes on HARD level of difficulty I wait about 5 mins for each AI player to finish his turn. Once or twice my game started slowing up even during my turn. I checked the subforlders and guess what i found
-- there were about 30 000 files in the savegame folder, a couple of KBs each After deleting these things got a lot better.

In my current game in a large galaxy with two very large AI empires at stardate 2431.0 the AI turn takes about an hour on my PII 233Mhz computer! But it works correctely and to complete my turn I usually have more than an hour.
