Agreed. Although I consider it to be "something wrong" if you only can fix important things with inside knowledge .

Well then if you don't know enough to fix all the problems with XP then go with 98.
Unless you plan on doing games, 98 really will do everything you will want it to do.
You don't exactly need a 3000$ Alienware system to play Space Empires, get e-mail, and word process. Just get a computer that does what you need and no more.

This is a Firewire Port, isn't it? Badger, take a peek at the link below where I did a search through the Microsoft Support Page:
Micosoft Support Search: ieee 1394 Win98
There's a lot of info, but there may be something to help. Win98 is either being stubborn or doesn't recognize the manufacturer of your Firewire Port. Aside from whatever info is on the above link, you may have to visit the website of your Firewire Card (or Motherboard if Firewire is built in) for more specific Drivers.
Glad to see Win98 is co-operating with you more now though!

Re: OT: need help installing Win98SE on new HD
Right, from the looks of it the 1394 is part of your motherboard chipset. Win98 is much older than the 1394, so it may not recognize it.
I recently reformated my HD and reloaded win98se.
I am glad I had broadband for downloading all of the updates and drivers I needed.
If you only have a 52K modem, then WinXP could be a better choice.
BTW: I partioned my drive and gave C: (system) drive only 5GB. That's more than enough for the operating system, security program and antivirus. If my system registry crashes again, I only have to rebuild drive C:, while drive D: can be left alone.
P.S. It is likely to late for you to do it using the typical DOS utilities. But, there are programs like Partition Magic. There may even be some good freeware.

Re: OT: need help installing Win98SE on new HD
Thanks for the advice, Katchoo and WarDad. I haven't even got back to looking at the 1394 ports yet, as I spent so much time just trying to get the essentials running that I am a bit behind on other work that needs doing around here. When I get caught up on that stuff I'll have a go at the 1394 stuff.
Thanks again.

I have yet to see a game that won't run on 98. All you need is a fast enough chip and enough RAM. With less OS overhead, there is more left over for the games themselves.
