Re: Who\'s going to see Return of the King tonight?
Saw it Last night.
As someone who has read the books 5 times each, this movie was totally, completely, unabashadly awesome.
He made one change I disagreed with (the mountain men living on the edge of Gondor/Rohan are... changed. I wont give it away) but it didnt' detract much from the story.
Recently, my wife and I rented Tomb Raider. Afterwards I said "that was disappointing" and my wife said "you usually say that". Its true. I'm almost always disappointed in movies and tv. Lack of imagination, catering to the bottom line (sex sells! Make the good guys bad too! Money, stuff, kill kill kill with no remorse!) cut here, cut there, stylized garbage every Last bit!
Its been a long time since I wasn't disappointed. Peter Jackson read my mind and even took me in different directions while staying as true to the LOTR as you can in 3 1/2 hours.
Totally, totally awesome.

Re: Who\'s going to see Return of the King tonight?
Saw it, loved it, can't wait to buy the extended dvd to see all of those scenes they had to cut. The most disappointing thing for me was they cut out the real return of the hobbits to The Shire. I hope when the dvd is released, they have an alternate ending where they showed what happened in the book. And for those who don't know what I mean, you'll have to see the movie then read the book to know.

Hate to disappoint you, but the Scouring of the Shire was never filmed. It apparently was PJ's least favorite part of the story, and he wrote it completely out of the screenplay.

You have to admit it's a awkward extension of the story. If he didn't spend an hour-and-a-half on that story alone it would feel rushed and incomplete. Heck it feels a little rushed in the books.
Unlike a subplot that can be addressed throughout the movie or series of movies, the Scouring of the Shire takes place all by itself, at the end, after everything else has been wrapped up. That's murder in screenplay-land.

Darn, that's disappointing. But still, it was a great movie and I'll watch any and all extra scenes when the dvd comes out.
