The second book is transitional, but it does better. The movie is focused on Rohan, while the book is focused on Orthanc, since that's the center of Sauron's activity in the area. Also, the stopping point for the movie is pretty dull--I know you have to wrap things up for a movie; but it's not like a real sequel--it's a story in three parts.

Oh well. It's not like that was a dramatic scene, a clash between two massive powers, a test of two wills, or something that would have looked great on screen or anything.
