Geo, to a certain extent, one could say that about the second book too. It certainly was transitional. The movie struggled with it as much as the novels did IMO.
I the ROTK was the best of the 3, as I did with the book, it really is an epic.
I thought the ending scenes were probably unnecessary for the movie in that everyone I knew (who had not read the books) really didn't quite understand what it was all about. They could have just left it in the extended Version IMO.
I was dissapointed they did not film the scene at the gate of MT when Gandalph and the Lord of the Nazgul clashed after grond had broken that gate. That was one of my favorite passages in the book.
But overall.... very very good.

Did that scene strke anyone else as being a deliberate "copy" of the scene in once one of the Star Wars movies where Luke climbs up a rope to take out an ATAT?
I have to say I really enjoyed the interplay between Gimli and Legolas.

That did come to mind for me as well actually. Is that scene not in the books?

Yes, I understand teh need for transition when dealing with a story of this length. And to be fair part two didn't feel that akward when I saw it. It did seem to fit the transitional phase quite well at the time. But somehow, after seeing part 3, part 2 changed from feeling transitional more into something that felt redundant.
Perhaps if I saw all three in close order instead of months between them I will see it differently. I'll have to try and watch them all togehether some day once all the DVD's are out.

I saw the movie Christmas day. It was very good as far as movies go, but I must say I left a bit unsatisfied. This one felt to me to be much the same as the second movie, only on a somewhat grander scale. Almost as if you could have watched part one and part three, and not noticed part two was missing if you hadn't read the books, which I haven't.
I had many questions about why some things happened the way they did, and stuff like that. I read the Hobbit a long time ago, but never the LOTR. I have decided to read them now and hope that it will help me understand what wasn't in the movies, but was hinted at. I reread the Hobbit over the weekend and have started on Fellowship now. It's hard to put down once you start, but I am sure I am not telling you all anything you don't already know.

If you read the Hobbit, then the LOTR trilogy, you'll notice there is a difference in the style in which they're written. The Hobbit was almost whimsical and childish, especially with all of the songs and poems in it. Then you read the trilogy, and it is much darker. Maybe that's why Jackson didn't film the Hobbit, although I would like to see a live-action Version of that. About half of the movie is from what wasn't shown in the second book; ie, when Frodo & company first enter Mordor, and what happened to Saruman after his tower was flooded. That's why the movie was longer than the other 2. All in all, though, this is the best fantasy movie(s) ever made, and I doubt we'll see any better for quite awhile. Sure, we may see some imitators trying to cash in on the LOTR whooplah, but just like the ones who tried to do that after Star WARs, most of them won't be worth watching.

Re: Who\'s going to see Return of the King tonight?
I always felt the LOTR started off in the style of the hobbit but progressed to something much darker and more epic. I think the films capture this well. I think, given good screen writing, the Hobbit could be adapted very well to the big screen too.

Of course not. Neither was that ridiculous skate/snowboarding scene in the 2nd movie...

The second book is transitional, but it does better. The movie is focused on Rohan, while the book is focused on Orthanc, since that's the center of Sauron's activity in the area. Also, the stopping point for the movie is pretty dull--I know you have to wrap things up for a movie; but it's not like a real sequel--it's a story in three parts.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGH! THEY LEFT THAT OUT?????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
*stomps up and down, jumping in little circles*
Oh well. It's not like that was a dramatic scene, a clash between two massive powers, a test of two wills, or something that would have looked great on screen or anything.

Re: Who\'s going to see Return of the King tonight?
One can only hope but given the scenes around the breaking of the gate that were in the theatrical cut, I really can't see it myself.

Re: Who\'s going to see Return of the King tonight?
Some of the extra scenes in FOTR didn't look like they would have been there, given the scenes around them in the theatrical cut. Same with TTT. There are slightly different Versions of such scenes in the theatrical cuts to cover up the gaps.
