We have some WAP's here at work and I haven't been able to get WEP to work either. For protection I have just used MAC address filtering; while not the most secure method we haven't had any problems with it. I will continue working on the WEP problem here until I figure it out.
Do you live in the city, Ed? If you didn't then I wouldn't worry about it too much since I doubt anyone will go around driving in the rural areas with a wireless card looking for someone to invade.
