To radiate the exess heat from the reactor/engine - in space there is no other way to cool your ship and no energy source is 100% efficient.
All future spacecraft will have some sort of wing-shape structures. Just take a look on the NASA concept nuclear-powered probe for Jupiter/Saturn survey !

Nice work, AT! I like the blue one the best; it just looks meaner then the red one does. And if it is going to be a machine race would be more fitting, IMO.

I agree with Fyron.  
If you order the ships in numbers as code:
1 2
3 4
Then ship 3/4 (same one) I think the main capsule is a little small in relation to the rest of the ship. But I still like the ships very much. I look forward to the rest of the images.
