Little things to be sure, but get enough little things right and they make a big thing
As to best SP game... well alot depends on what you are looking for. Certain settings handicap either the player or the AI (as GP pointed out), and setting up 'themed' games, like one human race aginst all the nonhuman races (or vice versa) can be entertaining from a RP point of view. I usually don't play with Ermor active though, since the other AIs just can't seem to handle them, and if I don't start close to them to keep them in check, they tend to just overrun the rest of the map. That can be fun to play against too, but it also gets a bit repetative.

I agree. The more I play, the better I start play. Which leads to me being in the driver's seat more and more late in the game. Which means there is a ton of crap to do every turn.
I *really* wish there was a goto command that worked within contiguous friendly provinces. Its such a huge pain the *** to try and direct stacks that move 1 province per turn from far off.
Auto-building temples would also be cool, as would auto-searching. Auto dumping blood slaves would also be nice, why isnt that done?

I dont think those are such little things for a PBEM game to do. Remember that everything is packaged up and sent to a host for processing (even in a solo game). And there is no real setup for remembering things across turns. I think almost everything is refigured each turn. Just because it *might* be difficult for PBEM to handle should have no relevance on weather or not it should be considered. The easiest solution is for the PBEM host to simply ignore those orders and revert to defend (or hide).
Anyway, I don't see that it would be all that tricky, especially the auto search, there its just move to an adjacent unsearched province (or not fully searched) and if in an unsearched province search it. The problems with auto move are obvious, but also trivially easy to counter, if the path is blocked or the destination is no longer valid, then revert to defend, honestly I don't see what's so difficult from a processing stand point. It might make the .h2 files a bit bigger, but they are already so tiny I can't even imagine that it would be much of an issue.

Re: designs for best single play experience
I've had a lot of fun in single-player games as Mictlan and as Ulm. I have used normal or slow magic research, normal or high event frequency, normal or high site frequency, Normal/Hard/Impossible AI's (several of them at once). Different players have different tastes and skills, though. I think it helps to do a bit of roleplaying and take it easy when not in an immediate war with someone. Try to do interesting and unique things, and pay attention to character histories, and try to cultivate and keep alive veterans and heroes. Try out various units, tactics, and magics. (Don't be a system-exploiting munchkin looking for the best and most efficient thing to do, and do that to the max. At least for me, that's just trying to minimize the fun, unless reacting to a desperate situation in the game.) This all makes for a really fun game, for me anyway.

Re: designs for best single play experience
Use the Inland Map... Activate all nations and set them all to the hardest level of ai... (be sure to have 1 human player)... start playing...
this will be your ultimate gaming experience ever... but it's not for the faint hearted...
