Captain Spoogy's Favourites...

1 Space Empires Series
2 Sim City Series
3 Empire Series
4 Masters of Orion 2
5 Earl Weaver Baseball

I have also enjoyed playing at some point or another; Deadlock, Transport/Rail Tycoon, NHL 2000, Homeworld, Outpost...

I seem to play different games in phases - it's just that the latest SE IV phase has Lasted a long time!

henk brouwer: If you like Scorched Earth, check out Worms. That game just rocks

For me:
MW series
SE series
Worms series (Armeggedon being the only one I've played, but the others- II and World Party- are similar)
Mechcommander
Fighter's Anthology- I *really* wanted to like USAF, but I could never get it running right, stick didn't want to work. Not only that, it had problems at low altitudes, and guess which plane I used. Yup, the A-10.
Freespace 2

If I could ever figure out how to get 'Master Of Magic' to work on WIn2k that would still be on my list:

Space Empires 4
Alpha Centuari
Hong Kong Mah Jhong

Hmm. Showing my age here... These are nearly all Amiga games from 1995 or earlier. They are all still as good to play now as ever though.

Best 5 (in order)

1> SEIV. Obviously. Not for what it is (an absorbing and challenging game) but for what it might yet be (an all- consuming substitute for real life)

2>Bullfrog God sims, ie Powermonger / populous: For the attention to detail and "real world" atmosphere. And that heartbeat that set your own pulse racing... Boomboom... boomboom.. boomboomboomboom... boomboomboomboom...

3> Llamatron 2112: Old (1990? 1991?) Amiga freeware game. With non-stop action, surreal sound effects and hypnotic strobing graphics to make you eyes bleed, playing this at night after a few beers is like some kind of mind altering drugs experience. Very addictive, especially in 2 plyr mode.

4>Speedball II, brutal deluxe. Just for the sheer style and quality of it. The ultra violence and the (literally) palm- blistering gamplay help as well=-) Doesn't matter how many times I complete it I still want to play again.

5>Wipeout 2097, For the speed, the music and the cool. It was historically groundbreaking in terms of changing attitudes towards gaming.

Further down the list would be

> Alien Breed series: Really atmospheric games- just like being in one of the aliens films, but without violating any of the copyrights=-)
>Elite/Frontier (For years these were unsurpassed in terms of absorbing the player)
>Worms (For those 4 people crowded around one monitor moments),
>Datastorm (little known defender clone on the amiga. One of the fastest games I've ever played.)
> Columns (you know that Tetris meets connect 4 thing - just for chilling out with, excellent thumb candy)
>Duke Nukem 3D (nostalgic reasons)
>and ooh... loads of others.

Wow! I loved Mail order monsters too! I can't believe someone else besides me remembers that game. What a bLast it was (although it's hard rememering much of it... )

For me it's (in no particular order)

MOM
HOMMIII
Half-Life / Counter-Strike
Civilization
Steel Panthers

I love SEIV, but it just doesn't make my top 5 list... please don't hurt me!

oh yea, MOM was one of the best games ever made, i used to play it on the c64. there are some modern console games that are cheap knock offs with spiffy graphics but no comparison on the content.
