assassination or bad luck?

I got a message that a commnader that was moving between provinces was unexpectedly shot by an arrow and died?

Was this an assassination or a luck event??

Neither, is was the spell "Seeking arrow" (enchantment 3, air3)

Look for the nation with easy access to air magic and get revenge.

I guess you can call it an assassination, because it had nothing to do with luck.

You can prevent it by either having your commanders avoid detection by hiding, or putting a dome or two over the province to deflect spells.

Bodyguards dont do any good, amulets of missile protection, high protection or etherealness do. When the spells get tougher, it is however a good idea to have loads of scouts accompany importnant leaders, as the target is chosen randomly.

And, as for almost everything else in dom, the best protection is to find the casting mage and teach him some basic manners.

Air shield items also help against Seeking Arrow -- amulet of missile protection, or the robe (cloak?) that does the same thing, or a shield of valor (lovely item, that).
Even with missile protection, you still have to watch out for things like Fires From Afar (fire immunity; dome), Mind Hunt (friendly astral mage; dome; high MR); Earth Attack (combat power; dome), Wind Ride (size 6; earth magic; ethereal; dome; seriously ultra combat power); Manifestation (combat power; dome); Leprosy (high MR; dome), Flames From the Sky (fire immunity, dome), Murdering Winter (cold immunity, dome) etc.

heh Leprosy is SOOO nice against AI. You just have to wait for chokepoints, AI masses troops (400+) you get your level 10 deathmage with magic penetration amulet and a ring of sorcercy and cast it ^^
