I have trouble keeping track of all my magic items, particualrly hammers and magic boosting items. I usually find them eventually, without a whole lot of trouble, though. Just look for the mages who are defending instead of researching. Although sometimes I give magic boosting items to researchers just for the bonus point of research. Then it gets harder.
