I always have a lab in provences that have a blood hunt. Also, it helps having cavalry or flyers doing the patroling.

You do not need labs, as you can give the slaves to cheap commanders that can go to labs. Scouts are useful for this. The problem is micromanagement... But with just 3 mages, and atleast one of them in the lab province, it shouldn't be too bad nuicance.
