What confused me is that I seemed to have lost the game while still having yellow candles.
You had white candles the turn before, but they were all erased during the dominion spreading phase of the turn generation, so you lost.

Yup, you must be right. Also, another moment is when I just now noticed you could pay up your dominion by clicking on the word. Duh, always thought it just came with your pretender. I like the arch mage because having lvl1 in everything makes for good gem searching early in the game, but the 1 dominion was killing me. I dropped down to 1 in everything except death and nature and bumped up dominion by 3, so I'll try that.

Thanks again for all comments and your patience.

It'd be nice if, when you get eliminated by your dominion being wiped out, it was a little more clear what had happened. There's nothing more frustrating than losing a game for no apparent reason. I haven't suffered through this yet, but I know that I would have been totally baffled by lachinet's experience if I'd only been playing for a little bit and it happened to me.

I agree. In Dominions 1, after I won my first game I thought I had lost. The reason being, a box with "Game Over" or somesuch appeared... After that I was very careful about my dominion...

If anyone didn't guess already, I won by killing the other pretender's dominion. AI.
