Heck if I was one of those wizards standing next to you... I would have burned down the lab too. Who wants to do work the Last few days of being alive.

The lab wasn't going to save you... at this point only one thing could have kept you alive:
Diplomacy

Convince the one attacking you that if he lets you live then you will join with him in attacking his enemies for the next 40 days. This has a slim chance of working... but still at least its a chance. Plus you could have bribed him with your existing gems as well to arrange for some peace treaty.... 30 death gems will make even the wisest pretender consider the offer of a peace treaty. (unless you are the Last one)

That build a lab thing would have changed nothing.

No, it was all too late for diplomacy, this was all about being able to do a Last stand, inflicting as much costs on my aggressor as possible. I don't like going down without fighting...

Anyway, as a coup de grace, it was very, very unsatisfying. Enough whine, though. It's over.
