How does works the "capturing" item sys?

Probably you should take all the items you can carry on, since they stay in the corpses only awaiting for someone that grab them.

Perhaps an uncouth soldier grabs the lost items and peddles them for beer or gives them to a pretty wench. There are all sort of plausible reasons why items are lost, just make up a plausible one. More powerfull items are easier to find, cursed items are extra easy to find.

Does anyone know if artifacts lost in battle become available for reconstruction, or are they lost permanently?

They are available for reconstruction on the next turn.
