OK. Interesting. I have found myself spending money on engines in the early game and doing a lot of running away in order to complete trade missions and get $$$. Is this a common approach or do some of you like to jump in and start the killing right away?
Ohhh, no no no.

The best thing to do when first starting out is to ghost through a few systems. Just cruise around and look for weapons fire. Then sit back and wait. Avoid becoming a part of the fight.
Alternately you can hunt around the mercenary guilds for bounty missions. Take them in systems that are heavily guarded by Terran fleets (Terra, New Texas, ect). Choose smugglers or freighters early off. A lot of times the Terran fleets will take out your target for you. Heck, I've even had them take themselves out - by running into each other!

Wait until the fight is over, then sweep in and pick up the discarded cargo. Drop illegal cargo and cheap stuff (armor, bridge, ect). Keep weapons, targeting systems, drives and expensive cargo.

Find someplace to sell the stuff, and beef up your ship (or upgrade to a bigger hull).

Download the mod in my GraphX thread - it's got problems starting new missions, but it'll load saves fine with a few visual glitches (components mapped to incorrect graphic slots). That'll go away as you replace the parts.

The P&N mods also are quite good. The Peoples' Mod is visually cool, but there is no 'story'. It's just a shooter.

You will need a program to convert .png graphics to .bmp (I use photoshop, but other programs might work). I guess I should really put a readme into that zip file. Be sure to back up the relevant unmodded files before replacing.

I prefer the heaviest Abbidon cruiser. Still has most of the speed and it handles like a cruiser- but its nearly as big as a battleship.

nah, what I like is an abbidon battleship, with about 2000 shields in front and back. I personally dont like small and fast ships, as an engine killing weapon slows me down and my almost nonexistent shields and armor dissapear. I hate xiati ships also, i dont like shooting from the rear or back of the ship. oh, and carriers are the worst type of ships IMHO, cause I dont like fighters, most of the time they hit me. I guess carriers are good for merchants,

I like ships with good maneuverebility and lots of front weapons. My personal favourite is Monarch which I guess would be like a dreadnought. It has four beam weapon slots but lacks maneuver.

On the standard models I like the abbidon cruiser. It maneuvers well plus it has room for weapons. Terran cruiser mark III is also good because of the two front light and heavy weapons.

In the latest P&N-ism mods, you can buy Auto-fire weapons for your secondary arcs.

Or even everything. Then you just fly and let the crew shoot

well, im new to starfury. I dont feel attracted to Space Empires because I play a similar game, which I believe has stopped being developed some years game. The game's name is Stars!. Anyway, what I wanted to tell is that I dont have any mods, and I dont know how to use them, even if I put my hands on some. But I'm sure that there are some links to mods on these forums, i just didn't have the time to look for them. But from what I've read here, they must be pretty cool, and I cant wait to get some.

Just download the zip or RAR file, and unpack it to your campaigns folder.

You should end up with some new campaign-ey sounding folders in there, like "P&N 1 - Homefront"

Then when you run SF and start a new game, the list of options will include the new mods.
